Clinical competence alone is not sufficient for consultants to fulfill an integral role in the running of the NHS. They need to demonstrate advanced skills in non–clinical areas and these skills are not innate – they need to be taught!

Information and Communications Technology has rapidly become an essential tool for clinical care, management, education and research with expertise in this area increasingly sought after in potential consultants.
The Royal College of Anaesthetists has recognised this and describes an Information Technology competency in its training manual. In response to this, the Society for Computing and Technology in Anaesthesia (SCATA) has developed Information Technology Life Support (ITLS) – a one-day course specifically designed by experts within the field to address the requirements of this competency. The programme includes sessions on Healthcare Computer Systems, Security & Confidentiality, Data Quality, Knowledge & Information Management and Healthcare Informatics as well as a guest lecture.

The ITLS course is approved by the Royal College of Anaesthetists for 5 external CME points and a successful post– assessment results in a ‘Certificate of Competence’ that can be used as evidence to support competency at appraisal.
